WELCOME!

Child Protective Services (CPS) has become my passion over the last year and a half while completing my Master’s degree in Social Work. I have been working in the field over the last year, and I strive to protect children that have been abused and neglected, provide resources to families, and most importantly seek family preservation & reunification. It has come to my attention over the last year that many individuals want to protect the unborn by calling in a report BUT social workers in CPS are limited by policy, and cannot intervene with a family until the child is born.

Current policy “defines an abused or neglected child as any child less than eighteen years of age” (Section 63.1-248.2 of the code of Virginia).

After weeks of research and advocacy this effort has uncovered the issues of inconsistent protocol. Staying connected to the idea of Personhood & CPS, in recent years substance-exposed newborns have become a concern for Departments of Social Services BUT children and families fall through the cracks because the professionals of the field do not handle issues of abuse and neglect consistently. Look forward to seeing where this new focus takes me…

Personhood & Child Protective Services blog is a social work advocacy effort for a service learning project for a Social Policy course for the MSW program at Virginia Commonwealth University.

This is terrific that you are so passionate about CPS work. I would love to talk with you about CPS in class because I will be starting as a CPS worker in a few weeks and would LOVE to hear about some of your experiences.
